Sentimental Value

Stellan Skarsgård and Renate Reinsve lead an incomparable cast in Joachim Trier’s moving drama about a director’s bid to revive his career and repair his family’s broken bonds. This Cannes Grand Prix winner is an intimate and moving exploration of family, memories and the reconciliatory power of art.

Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World, Perth Festival 2021) returns with Sentimental Value, starring returning muse Renate Reinsve alongside Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning.

After the death of their mother, sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father Gustav, a charismatic, once renowned film director. When he offers stage actress Nora a role in his new film, a deeply personal story that he hopes will launch a comeback, she turns it down. Nora soon discovers her part has been given to a young and eager Hollywood star, who begins to work on the film immediately. Suddenly, both sisters are forced to navigate their complicated relationship to Gustav while dealing with an American star nosing around their complex family dynamics.

Trier’s insightful and captivating drama furthers the writer-director’s piercing exploration of the frayed ties that bind us to one another and to our creative selves. Sentimental Value is an absorbing character study and impressive cinematic achievement in showing the layers of a complicated family relationship as well as the emotional salve that some of these relationships can provide.
