Mischa Maisky in Recital

Internationally renowned cellist Mischa Maisky returns to Perth for a highly anticipated recital at Winthrop Hall, joined by his daughter, distinguished pianist Lily Maisky. Celebrated for his rich, resonant tone and hailed by ABC Classic for his communicative and flamboyant artistry, Mischa is admired for his emotional intensity and a vast catalogue of acclaimed recordings. As Rostropovich’s favourite student, he brings a remarkable legacy to the stage.

Together, the father–daughter duo will deliver an exceptional program of works by Schubert, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich.

Mischa Maisky is one of the world’s leading cellists and the only musician to have studied with both Mstislav Rostropovich and Gregor Piatigorsky. Praised by Rostropovich for his poetic, delicate, and technically brilliant playing, he has built an international career spanning major music centres including London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, New York, and Tokyo.

Born in Latvia, trained in Russia, Maisky describes himself as a true “citizen of the world,” reflecting both his cosmopolitan life and global musical reach. A regular guest at major international festivals, he has performed with many of the world’s top conductors such as Bernstein, Mehta, Barenboim, and Dudamel, and collaborated with leading artists including Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, Itzhak Perlman, Lang Lang, Joshua Bell, and Janine Jansen.

A highlight of his career was his worldwide Bach tour in 2000, performing over 100 concerts. He has recorded Bach’s Solo Cello Suites three times, with his recording of Suite No. 1 surpassing 45 million views on YouTube. As a Deutsche Grammophon exclusive artist for over 30 years, Maisky has released more than 35 acclaimed recordings with top orchestras. His personal album Adagietto (2018), featuring his daughter Lily and other distinguished collaborators, further showcased his artistic depth, and in 2021 DG issued a 44-CD box set of his complete recordings.

His numerous international awards include the Record Academy Prize (Tokyo), the Echo Klassik Award, the Grand Prix du Disque, the Diapason d’Or, and several Grammy nominations. He has also received major honours such as the Istanbul Music Festival Lifetime Achievement Award (2018), Honorary Membership of the Royal Academy of Music (2019), appointment as Honorary Academician of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia (2021), and the Honorary Fellow Award from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.
