Ray Chen: 8 Seasons

Winthrop Hall has a way of making a concert feel like an occasion.

Built in 1932, the cathedral-like hall has welcomed generations of artists, dignitaries and heads of state. Its vaulted ceiling, stained glass, pipe organ and bright classical acoustic make it one of Perth's most memorable places to hear live music. With close to 1,000 seats, the hall is grand in scale but retains a rare sense of intimacy.

Into this remarkable space come violinist Ray Chen and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, one of Australia's finest chamber ensembles.

Vivaldi's The Four Seasons brings the natural world to life in music: calling birds, gathering storms, frozen landscapes and racing summer heat. Piazzolla transports those same seasons to Buenos Aires, replacing the Italian countryside with the smoky intensity and irresistible rhythm of tango.

Two composers. Two cities. Eight seasons in a single evening, performed by musicians capable of bringing every detail, and every sudden change of temperature, to life.

MELBOURNE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Directed by celebrated Australian violinist and concertmaster Sophie Rowell, the MCO is Victoria's leading professional chamber orchestra offering a fresh, vibrant, intimate and modern take on orchestral performances. A pint-sized powerhouse, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra proves that the best things come in small packages.

In more than 70 performances each season, the orchestra brings top Australian musicians together in inspiring programs of uncompromising artistic quality, finesse, and passion.

The MCO's mainstage season is presented at Melbourne Recital Centre and broadcast on ABC Classic. The ensemble also hosts A Feast of Music, an annual spring chamber music festival in Daylesford, as well as a range of chamber, education and outreach programs that tour extensively across Victoria and beyond.
